‘Bug Geeks’ swarm the center

The Knoxville Convention Center is already crawling with bug enthusiasts as we host the 60th annual meeting of the Entomological Society of America (ESA) starting on Sunday. It’s the largest meeting of entomologists in the world with more than 4,000 self-proclaimed “bug geeks” from more than 50 countries coming to Knoxville for the four-day conference.

While in town, the entomologists are enjoying the Knoxville attractions. The conference is hosting field trips to a University of Tennessee home football game against Missouri on Saturday and to the UT body farm, which I’m sure will be right up their alley. It’s further proof that Knoxville truly has something for every interest.

At the conference, entomology experts, including University of Tennessee faculty, will present new findings, research papers and seminars. An insect photography contest will be held with entries displayed inside the center. One of the highlights of the event is a question-and-answer, College Bowl-style competition among university teams on entomological facts called the Linnaean Games. Entomology students from across the country send teams to participate.

Scientific conferences like the ESA meeting have become a niche market for the center and a significant economic driver for Knoxville, and we’re glad to have them here. With the proximity of the University of Tennessee, Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the Technology Corridor providing a wealth of technological interest, we are the perfect place for these conferences.

We’re very centrally located for national conferences with many unique, fun activities easily within walking distance in downtown Knoxville and the University of Tennessee.  Our facility has hosted scientific conferences from across the country and the world with attendees from more than 64 nations, and they’ve all had a great time. Here at the Convention Center, we love it when the scientists come to town!
