Martin-ReceptionCuonzo Martin has recently joined the University of Tennessee family as the new men’s basketball coach. And recently we welcomed him in Go Vols! style at the Knoxville Convention Center.

More than 200 community leaders, elected officials, basketball fans and friends gathered at the Center for an opportunity to meet the new coach, his lovely wife Roberta, and the new coaching staff.

After being greeted by Coach Martin and his wife and representatives of the event sponsors – Pilot, University of Tennessee Medical Center, First Tennessee Bank and the Knoxville News Sentinel – guests were treated to delicious refreshments prepared by our wonderful catering staff. There were basketball-themed hors d’oeuvres like “Slam Dunk” spinach and artichoke dip with chips resting in a basketball net, plus “Fowl Shot” chicken skewers and our signature macaroni and cheese bar, appropriately renamed “Pass the Pasta.” Orange carnations nestled on the edge of tall, glass vases made the table decorations look like basketballs falling into hoops, giving a final touch to the theme of the evening.

The atmosphere didn’t end with the food and flowers: Knox County Commissioner and basketball historian R. Larry Smith brought a portion of his collection of Tennessee basketball memorabilia to display. It ranges from vintage uniforms to the first program printed; the most recent addition is the invitation to this event. Guests enjoyed taking a step back in basketball history.

My thoughts on our new coach? He’s very tall, quite engaging, and serious about building on the success of the program. He is focused on academics and providing direction for his players. It sounds like there are good things ahead for UT basketball fans.
