We’ve had an exciting start to the New Year at the Knoxville Convention Center. This past weekend, the Healthy Living Expo returned for its eighth year to help us start 2013 off right and get people energized about fitness and healthy living.

Studies show about half of Americans made a New Year’s resolution this year, and nearly 40 percent of those resolutions were related to weight-loss or living a healthier lifestyle! Every January, the Healthy Living Expo provides approximately 8,000 East Tennesseans with the tools to follow through with their health-related New Year’s resolutions.

On Friday,  all seniors were admitted for free and enjoyed complimentary health checks, free prizes, free senior bingo, and free food samples. Getting seniors active is an important health initiative with only 25 percent of seniors age 65-74 engaging in regular physical activity!

Fitness expert, former University of Tennessee athlete, coach and Olympian Missy Kane hosted a free fitness demonstration using exercises from her popular daily fitness show “Fit & Fun with Missy Kane.” Her show, sponsored by Fort Sanders Health and Fitness Center, was specifically geared to meet the fitness needs of the young and old, and everyone in between. Members of her Biggest Winner Weight Loss Challenge Team provided testimonials and helped with the demonstration. Dr. Bob Overholt from the “Dr. Bob Overholt Show” on WBIR-TV also made an appearance giving senior health and wellness tips.

Zumba by The Rush was a fun, new feature added to this year’s expo.  Hundred of participants enjoyed this fast-paced, Latin-dance inspired workout and got their hearts pumping. The upbeat music and dance seemed like so much fun, I almost joined in myself! The Get Active Fitness Stage also featured demonstrations from experts in dance, karate, gymnastics, kickboxing, yoga, and more. What fun ways to get active!

Another popular New Year’s resolution is vowing to eat healthier. I know we’ve all been guilty of breaking this one a time or two, but the Healthy Living Expo covered that one too! On the Eat Right Cooking Stage, nutritionists, chefs and dieticians educated viewers on healthy meal choices and healthy shopping techniques.

Attendees of the Healthy Living Expo received some great tips and motivation to keep their New Year’s resolutions. Cheers to a healthier 2013, and we’ll see you next year at the Healthy Living Expo!
