Have you been seeing a few extra people in downtown this week? That’s because 16,000 kids and parents are visiting Knoxville this week for the 2013 Destination Imagination Global Finals competition held at the University of Tennessee and the Knoxville Convention Center.

This is the 13th year we’ve hosted the Global Finals in Knoxville. Destination Imagination is a national program that inspires kids to discover their creativity through challenges and problem-solving.

The teams competing in Knoxville this week are the best of the best. Only teams that advanced past county, state and regional competitions participate in the Global Finals. This year’s final includes 1,200 teams from 45 states, seven Canadian provinces and 13 countries.

This event provides the perfect opportunity for us to introduce these out-of-towners to our great city and impress them with our Southern hospitality. Each year a new group of finalists comes in bringing visitors from all over the world. These guests fill local hotels and dine in local restaurants, making an economic impact of $20-$25 million on the community.

Many of the people we visit with have never been to Knoxville before. If they like what they see, chances are that they will come back to further explore our area; perhaps even bring a group or book a conference.

The Clinch Avenue Concourse will be used as the 3M Duct Tape Campground where students participate in a tape-by-numbers activity to create a giant duct tape mural. It’s quite impressive!

Throughout the event, our facility will be the site of the Innovation Expo, featuring vendors offering an interactive experience with their products, a souvenir sales area, and a dedicated Fair Pin Trading Zone. Camps and competitions will also be held at the Center each day.

The entire Convention Center will be utilized during this event, from our meeting rooms and ballroom to our ground floor exhibit hall. This event gives us a chance to show off a lot of what we can do, from lighting and décor, to food service, to audio-visual capabilities.

We love having our Destination Imagination guests at the center, and apparently, the Destination Imagination Global Finals planning committee has enjoyed our Southern hospitality in Knoxville. They have already scheduled the Global Finals 14th trip to Knoxville in 2014.
