The New Year is off to a great start as the Knoxville Convention Center welcomes more than 700 canine visitors and their handlers for the 94th Annual American Spaniel Club (ASC) Flushing Spaniel Show on Jan. 10-12 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

For the third consecutive year, Knoxville will host flushing spaniels ranging from American Water, Boykin, Clumber and Cocker to English Cocker, English Springer, Field, Sussex and Welsh breeds. The dogs will compete in several categories, including showmanship, obedience, conformation and rally. A “flushing” spaniel is a classification of dogs traditionally bred to assist hunters by flushing or driving out game, especially birds, from their hiding places.

This year, our two- and four-legged guests include dogs and their handlers from close to home and all over the world, including Hong Kong, Japan, Australia, the United Kingdom and Denmark – all competing for the title of “Best in Show.” Dogs will also be selected by breed for “Best Veteran in Show,” “Best Puppy in Show” and “Best Owner Handled in Show.”

The American Spaniel Club is the oldest dog club in the country, dating to 1877, and is even older than the American Kennel Club (AKC), which presents the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show in New York next month. We are proud to have been selected by an institution with such history. The ASC was referred to us originally from another property managed by our parent company, SMG, and has chosen to return three times to Knoxville.

The event is free and open to the public this weekend, and Event Chair Jane Williams encourages visitors to attend the competition, especially those who are interested in learning more about caring for pure breeds or entering dog shows. In addition to presenting a fun competition, ASC’s mission is to educate the general public on how to properly raise and care for pure breed dogs and the spaniel breed.

According to Williams, the Flushing Spaniel Show is the premier event for the spaniel breed in the country – even bigger than the Westminster show! We are honored that this prestigious show has chosen the Knoxville Convention Center, and we wish these four-legged champions the best in the competition.
