We’re seeing Red at the Knoxville Convention Center

2011-5-Go-Red-1Hundreds of women donned their red and enjoyed The American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women luncheon held here this week. It’s an event dedicated to raising awareness of heart disease — the No. 1 killer of women. And the color certainly gets your attention.

The luncheon was a fun way to gain information and inspiration. Amy Rosine, physician and nutritionist for Summit Medical Group, gave a delicious healthy cooking demonstration to help us eat our way into a healthy heart.

Premier Surgical Associates and Mercy Health Partners were on site to offer screenings that are so important in determining our heart health.

Season 9 “Biggest Loser” contestant Sherry Johnson shared some lessons learned through her reality show experience regarding weight loss and heart health.

Two more ladies in red with a heart for fighting heart disease were featured guests at the event. Barbara Dooley, mother of University of Tennessee football head coach Derek Dooley, gave us some humorous motivation to stay healthy, reasoning that if you die, another woman will be in your house! Hmmm. And UT Lady Vols basketball head coach Pat Summitt issued a heart health challenge — with her signature glare! — and led us all in a chorus of “Rocky Top.”

It was another fun and exciting event at the KCC, but more importantly, it keeps us mindful of this deadly disease. Now I know my numbers – cholesterol level, blood pressure, body mass index – and what I need to do to stay healthy. Do you?
