The M&M Productions team with Coach Rick Barnes.

The Knoxville Convention Center team held a slam-dunk welcome this week for Rick Barnes, the new head coach of the University of Tennessee men’s basketball program. As soon as we knew we would host the reception, our in-house event planning team began brainstorming ideas to showcase our Vol spirit for the coach, his staff and the elected officials and community leaders who would attend the event.

Our in-house audiovisual partner, M&M Productions USA, is the best in the industry, and a creative idea from the company’s president, Mike Brown, created the “wow” factor for the evening. The M&M Productions team created a massive, aglow basketball goal suspended from the ceiling as the focal point for the ballroom.

Barry Dunford, the Knoxville Convention Center’s audiovisual representative from M&M Productions, and his team built the massive basketball goal. At the center of the room, a 12-foot circular truss was hung from the ceiling like a chandelier, illuminating the area with rope lights in the shape of a basketball net with a Tennessee orange hue. The hoop not only lit up the room, but also the faces of attendees. Guest immediately looked up in amazement when they entered the ballroom – and kept talking about it when they later exited the reception.

According to the M&M Productions team, the most challenging part of creating the goal was tying the illuminated rope at the correct spots to realistically mimic a basketball net. The team was precise, measuring the dimensions of a basketball net and scaling it to fit a 12-foot diameter hoop. The attention to detail paid off, and the basketball net was hoisted into place in just two hours.

M&M Productions always goes above and beyond for our clients. In addition to the basketball hoop, the company provided orange up-lighting to create an atmospheric glow in the room and placed a projection screen behind the podium to welcome Coach Barnes in words and image. The room was beautiful and one-of-kind. Our client loved the finished product!

The aesthetics of the room were not the only scoring success that evening, as the food and beverage team performed to perfection. Lynn Armstrong, our senior catering sales manager, created Tennessee basketball thumbprint cookies and orange checkerboard Power T cookies to fit the Vols theme. Food & Beverage Director Kim Beets created a popular signature cocktail for the evening, a Volunteer-orange “Slam Dunk” martini.

Our team loves this town, and University of Tennessee athletics are a significant part of our city’s culture. We’re happy to welcome Coach Barnes to the Knoxville community, and we hope all of our guests enjoyed the party!
