Focus on Safety

It’s good to know that in the midst of overseeing upwards of 230 facilities across the globe, our management company continues to recognize and speak to one of the most important aspects of my job – safety.

It’s no secret that our longtime venue manager, SMG, sets a global standard in the management of public assembly facilities, but in addition to venue management, sales, marketing, event booking and programming, SMG also continues to recognize and speak to one of the most important aspects of managing a world-class convention center – employee safety.

Having recently returned from SMG’s 2013 Annual Operations Meeting, our venue manager’s focus remains apparent. Held in New Orleans, La., at SMG’s first venue, the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, the meeting spoke to the company’s commitment to safety with informational sessions on a variety of safety-related topics, including a 30-hour Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) course that has enabled me to bring valuable knowledge about improving our work environment at the Knoxville Convention Center.

Presentations from a panel of security experts, including representatives from Homeland Security, the New Orleans Fire Department, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Louisiana State Police and the New Orleans Emergency Medical Services, were also hosted at SMG’s meeting, providing over 115 attendees from venues across North America and roughly 75 of the industry’s leading vendors the most current and vital information on keeping their employees safe.

By having access to the panelists’ presentations, I was able to learn more about current security best practices and procedures and other emphasized industry safety initiatives. The perks of being an SMG-managed facility are numerous, and one of the most important benefits is having access to meetings, speakers, classes and other resources that help me keep our Convention Center safe for our employees and guests.
