My good friends Cynthia Moxley and Alan Carmichael will be honored in the Society of Professional Journalists annual Front Page Follies here at the Knoxville Convention Center on Saturday.

The show is a spoof of local news and newsmakers. The cast has been practicing hard and from the little snippet I saw in a recent promo it promises to be a great show.

FPF-2012-Art-WEB-300x284It will be a little strange this year for Alan, who is used to being on the stage poking fun at his peers. This time, he and Cynthia will be on the receiving end of some of the jokes. The Front Page Follies cartoon, penned by News Sentinel’s Charley Daniel, gives a little insight as to the fun the cast will have with this journalistic pair. Personally and through their premier public relations firm, Moxley Carmichael, Cynthia and Alan are typically right in the middle of most of the news in Knoxville.

And we have had plenty of interesting news in Knoxville this year, great fuel for script writer David Lauver. Stacey Campfield, always an interesting character in the show, will surely have a role again this year. And there have been a few other elected officials whose antics have made headlines this year as well.

The cast of public relations and media personalities always has a lot of fun for a good cause with this event. Proceeds go toward journalism scholarships at the University of Tennessee and Pellissippi State Community College.

Congratulations to Cynthia and Alan – you are well-deserving of this honor, and perhaps of a little roasting as well. I can’t wait to see this tribute!

If anyone else wants to join in for a fun evening, there is still time to get tickets. Contact Megan Venable Smith at 865-974-6903 or email

Cocktails and silent auction begin at 6 p.m., we will serve dinner at 7 p.m. and the show begins at 8 p.m.

I look forward to seeing you all there!
